FAQs
What is jewelry plating?
Jewelry soldering is a technique that’s used to seamlessly fuse two or more metal jewelry pieces together. Central to the process is the use of a torch, used to heat up solder alloys to join two base metal pieces together.
For each soldering task, jewelers meticulously select a solder alloy that matches the hue and color of the pieces being joined. Furthermore, it’s also crucial to choose solders with melting points lower than the base metals. This ensures the solder can be melted and shaped without altering the primary components; once the solder is cooled, it creates a strong and lasting bond.
Beyond using soldering for repairs, the technique also plays a central role in crafting new jewelry pieces from scratch.
What types of jewelry can be plated?
Most metal-based jewelry can be plated, including rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and pendants. Whether you want to reapply rhodium to a white gold ring or give an old gold pendant a new finish, jewelry plating is a great option to rejuvenate your pieces.
How long does jewelry plating last?
For pieces that receive frequent contact, like rings, plating would wear down relatively quickly compared to pieces that receive less wear, like pendants. This all being said, for a piece that’s worn daily, like a white gold engagement ring, the rhodium plating usually lasts a year or two before it needs to be redone but may last a lot longer.
What is Rhodium Plating?
Rhodium plating is the process of coating white gold jewelry with a thin layer of rhodium—a bright, silvery-white metal from the platinum family. While white gold is made by mixing yellow gold with white alloys like silver or palladium, the resulting metal still has a slightly warm tint.
To get that icy-white finish most people associate with white gold, the piece is rhodium-plated.
Rhodium plating not only improves the brightness and color of the piece, but also adds a layer of protection against scratches and tarnish
Why does white gold need rhodium plating?
White gold is made by combining yellow gold with white metals. In its unplated, raw form, white gold shows the subtle warm undertones from the yellow gold.
Rhodium plating is done to cover up these undertones, and to give white gold that signature frosty white finish that it’s known for
What does rhodium plating look like once it starts to wear off?
When the rhodium plating of a piece starts to wear off, it will begin to look duller, and the warm undertones of the white gold underneath will begin to show.
The coating usually doesn’t wear off evenly — areas that get the most contact will fade faster than parts that don’t rub against anything.
Can rhodium plating fix scratches on my jewelry?
Before a piece is rhodium-plated, it’s always cleaned and polished. This polishing step smooths out most of the small scratches on the surface.
Once the rhodium is applied, it adds a fresh, bright layer over the metal, which helps hide remaining light scratches and gives the piece an overall “like-new” look.
Deep scratches may need extra polishing before plating.
Is rhodium plating safe for diamonds and gemstones?
Yes, rhodium plating is completely safe for diamonds and most gemstones.
There are a few exceptions, though. Certain delicate stones, such as opals and pearls, are sensitive to the heat and chemicals involved in the process. For pieces with these gemstones, we simply remove them before replating to ensure they remain protected.
