Prong Retipping FAQs
What is Prong Retipping
Prong retipping refers to the process whereby the prongs on your jewelry that secure your gemstones are rebuilt or repaired. While prong retipping may be mainly done to restore the security of cradled gemstones, the process itself does help restore the original look of a piece.
Please note that prong retipping is a proactive service – it’s much more affordable to retip broken prongs than it is to replace your precious gemstones, should they fall out.
What pieces of jewelry can have their prongs retipped?
As long as your jewelry has gemstones secured in a setting with prongs, it can be retipped. This includes pieces such as rings, earrings, pendants, and bracelets.
How often should prongs be retipped?
How often prongs should be retipped really depends on the wear and tear of the prongs in question. If your prongs are damaged and you notice an insecure grip on your stones, it’s imperative that you bring your piece in for repair as soon as possible, otherwise you risk the stone falling out.
With this in mind, pieces that are worn every day typically need to be retipped more often than pieces that are worn for special occasions. This, of course, is due to the wear and tear that the jewelry would experience through daily use.
For each precious piece you have, we recommend that you have it periodically inspected to ensure its integrity is intact. As part of our professional cleaning services, we not only polish and clean your jewelry, but also inspect it for any outstanding repairs that need to be done.
How long does prong retipping take?
The amount of time it takes to retip a piece’s prongs depends on the setting’s complexity and the number of actual prongs that need work. That said, it’s best to get in contact with us to get an accurate estimate of the lead time repairing your piece would take.
How do I know if my prongs need to be retipped?
A simple visual rundown of your piece’s prongs can tell you a lot about their condition. If they appear dull, damaged, chipped, or bent, it’s probably time to have them retipped. Another tell is if the gemstone that they’re holding is loose or movable. This indicates that the prong’s secure hold on the stone has become compromised, and that it’s time to have them repaired or retipped.
Can worn prongs cause my gemstone to fall out?
Absolutely. Worn prongs are one of the most common reasons why gemstones fall out. Prongs are meant to securely hold your gemstone If they’re worn or damaged, their hold is jeopardized.
Will retipping change the look of my ring?
Yes! Dull or worn prongs take away from the aesthetic of your ring, making it look old and worn. Retipping them will rejuvenate your piece and help it look new again.
What happens if the prong is too worn to retip?
If your piece’s prongs are beyond repair, we can rebuild them.
What exactly is prong rebuilding? How does it differ from prong retipping?
Prong rebuilding is the process where we completely rebuild a prong on a setting from the ground up. During these projects, we can rebuild a single prong to match the existing setting or create new prongs with entirely new styles (e.g, bead prongs to claws).
Retipping, on the other hand, is a much smaller repair. Instead of rebuilding the whole prong, we simply add metal to the very top of a worn prong to restore its height and grip.
In both cases, we use solid gold or platinum to match the rest of your ring/prongs.
